As the weather cools, we fire up warming devices such as fireplaces and gas heaters, which can create carbon monoxide (CO) gas or set the home aflame. A warning device, such as a smoke and carbon monoxide detector, can alert us of colorless and odorless dangers when we’re sleeping or distracted. Detectors are crucial in these winter months, when the highest incidences of household fires and CO poisoning occur.

“Heating systems are a wonderful source of comfort for families during long, dreary winter months,” says Wayne Ross, insurance expert at Aviva Canada. “Unfortunately, they can also bring invisible dangers to your home, so it’s important to install detectors for a safe season indoors.”

Ross suggests following these tips to ensure you’ll be aware if something is not right:

1. Install multiple alarms: Place alarms in key places, such as sleeping quarters. Ensure there is at least one of each per level to guarantee everyone hears the alarm.

2. Do regular checkups: Replace the batteries twice a year, and test your detectors at least once per month. Detectors older than ten years old should be replaced.

3. Call your insurance company: Revisit your policy and let your insurer know about your new detectors-you may be eligible for a discount.

With these tips in mind, you will ensure that you and your family stay warm while staying safe this heating season. More information is available from your insurance broker or online at www.avivacanada.com.
