If you’re getting ready to either buy or sell, you may be dreading the awful task of researching what real estate agent to use. Here’s a few tips to finding your real estate agent match made in heaven:

  1. First and foremost, ask around! Ask your friends, family, co-workers, vet, coffee shop employee, if they have ever used an agent they’d recommend without hesitation. If they’re reluctant to give someone’s name or info, they likely weren’t thrilled with the service they received, so steer clear of unsure responses! Agents who pride themselves on doing a good job want people to gossip about them.
  2. Ask questions. Lets say you do get a good referral from a friend. Your friend tells you about what a wonderful experience it was, how so-and-so is the best, attentive, and an all around real estate superhero. Make sure you ask a couple of key questions that could shed some light on the lesser of the fantastic experiences (“did you ever feel pressure? stress? how did agents name handle that?” is a good example).
  3. Options. Even if someone gives you a glowing review of their superhero agent, shop around a bit and look for a few agents to “interview”. Look into agents who seem to pop up everywhere in the neighbourhood you’re selling or buying in. Check online. ITS OKAY TO INTERVIEW US! We’re used to it, we won’t be offended if you tell us you have a few more agents to talk to before deciding. We want to meet you, woo you, and honestly make sure we meet your expectations and earn your trust. Of course, if you don’t choose to use an agents’ services in the end, a follow up email is nice but never required.
  4. Ask questions (again). If you decide to talk to a few agents before making a decision on who to use, its important to ask as many questions as you can. Real estate agents who are worth their weight in gold will always find time to answer, guide, and address concerns upfront. Don’t settle for less than that.
  5. Go with your gut. If someone gives you the heeby-jeebies or makes you uncomfortable, listen to that gut instinct! You should feel confident and comfortable, after all, you’re the client and if there’s anything you need, you don’t want to feel hesitation in getting in touch with you agent.
  6. Remember that your agent, at the end of the day, works FOR YOU! We don’t work against you, over you, or for the other side of a deal. Your agent needs to have your best interest in mind at all times.

Finally, not to toot our own horn or anything, but your agent should totally mow the lawn of your home if you’re getting ready to sell it. (OK – actually this is probably best left for a professional!)
